The Future of Macromedia Director is Looking More Solid

I'm not wholly informed on this subject other than periodically following posts on the Director 3D mailing list, but I'm seeing much more solid hope-generating news about the future of Macromedia (now Adobe) Director.

Years ago, I had it in my head that Director development was the way to go for online/CD delivery of games. These days, I've been searching for alternatives rabidly as I thought Director was going away. This gives a window into a possible future that includes an upgraded Director (there has been talk elsewhere, but I liked reading this.) Here's a response from Thomas Higgins in reply to a question about what the future holds for Director or regarding plans for an upgrade:

The above are the first two steps we've made in confirming that the product will continue to be developed under Adobe. Note very clearly that this is not "maintenance mode", this is ongoing future development and support for the product. While we haven't yet offered commitments in any feature area I have mentioned that we're focusing on improving the product as it is today more than we are chasing new media types or adding extra features. While that doesn't confirm/deny any particular features I do hope that it demonstrates that the product will not only continue to exist but continue to move forward with Adobe as its new owner. The natural follow question is: what directions will that "forward movement" take the product? That's going to focus around some key developer verticals with the primary growth area being games developers, of course that begs for a 3D update if we're really to go after it and as such that's the business case being made even today to Adobe execs (and as I said it's getting some attention from them unlike anything we had under Macromedia the last few years). In the long-run we hope to be sharing roadmap type information so that you can believe it not because I sent some email you happened to read but because it will be something you can read on our website.

Again, the FAQ and interview above are not the sum total of our efforts, they are the first in a series of efforts that we hope will offer insight into the product's future.

Cheers,
